You know, I always thought “philanthropy” meant “just loving people,” and then someone told me it’s also about helping people with your time, money, or expertise. So, guess what? We’re all philanthropists now—well, at least we will be on October 24, 2024! Let’s get ready to make a real difference.
This year, the Senior Lawyers Division (SLD) is participating in the 2024 ABA Giving Day, focusing on initiatives that protect seniors, support lawyers transitioning into retirement, and improve the well-being of those in our profession. Last year, our generous donations made a big impact, and this year, we’re stepping it up with even bigger goals.
How It Works:
Here’s how SLD’s philanthropy works: Through donations from ABA Giving Day, we fund initiatives that tackle elder fraud, offer wellness resources for aging lawyers, and provide educational programs about transitioning into retirement. And this year, we’re adding more programs, including partnerships with AmeriCorps to leverage senior skills post-retirement.
Who’s Involved:
Everyone who gives becomes part of a growing network helping to protect seniors from financial scams, support lawyers who need resources in retirement, and improve access to wellness programs designed specifically for our aging community. So, whether you’re a seasoned lawyer or just care about giving back, your support matters.
Real-Life Example:
Last year, thanks to your donations, we raised $4,935 to kickstart our Elder Fraud Prevention and Detection Initiative at the 2024 Fall Meeting. We’ve already made great strides in offering educational presentations to help protect seniors from financial fraud, and it’s only the beginning.
Why You Should Care:
These programs don’t just sound good on paper—they create real change. Protecting seniors from fraud could mean saving their life savings. Providing wellness resources for aging lawyers ensures they don’t face health issues alone. And offering retirement guidance? That helps lawyers move forward with peace of mind after a lifetime of service.
How You Can Help:
Here’s how you can make a difference:
- Donate: On October 24, 2024, be a part of ABA Giving Day. Your contribution—big or small—goes directly to support these important causes.
- Spread the Word: Let friends and colleagues know about the initiatives. The more people who know, the bigger the impact we can make together.
- Get Involved: Whether it’s through the wellness webinars, fraud prevention seminars, or our partnership with AmeriCorps, there’s a way for everyone to contribute time, knowledge, or resources.
Quick Tips & Updates:
- Did You Know? One in five seniors is targeted by financial scams each year. That’s why our fraud prevention initiative is crucial.
- Pro Tip: Giving doesn’t just mean financial contributions—sharing information about these programs with colleagues and loved ones can be just as valuable.
Ever been involved in a fraud prevention seminar or wellness program? Tell us your story! How did it help you? Your experience might encourage others to give or get involved.
Let’s make a difference together. Your donations on October 24 can help fund programs that protect seniors, support retired lawyers, and build a healthier community for everyone. Be a philanthropist and give generously this ABA Giving Day!
