Keep An Eye Out for These Scams This Summer

Ready to soak up some sun this summer? While you’re putting on that sunblock, don’t forget to protect your bank account too. Scammers are on the prowl, and they don’t take vacations! Here’s what you need to watch out for, courtesy of WCNC Charlotte.

Common Summer Scams Heating Up

Fake Toll Charges: Imagine this – you’re relaxing on your vacation, and you get a text about overdue toll charges. It’s a scam! Fraudsters are sending fake messages pretending to be from tolling agencies. Always verify through official channels before paying any tolls.

Travel Scams: Who doesn’t love a free vacation? Well, scammers know this too. Be wary of “free vacation offers,” robocalls about vacation deals, or fake vacation rentals. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Job Scams: Looking for a summer job? Beware of unsolicited calls or social media messages from imposters claiming to be from staffing agencies. They may even ask for cryptocurrency payments to “unlock” job opportunities. Legitimate companies don’t operate this way.

Regulator Validated Practices to Protect Yourself

  1. Verify Before You Pay: Always confirm the legitimacy of toll charges through official websites or customer service.
  2. Research Travel Offers: Check reviews and verify vacation deals and rentals through trusted sources.
  3. Job Offer Checks: Contact the supposed employer directly using official contact details found on their website.
